Rothenburg Christmas Market

Wednesday, November 26, 2014

I just want to say a very quick thank you for all of the nice comments you guys have had! Over the past couple of days, many of you have mentioned how helpful this series is and I've gotten more than a few compliments on my pictures as well - thank you so much for those awesome words! You have no idea how much it boosts my spirits to be able to do something that is helpful and valued.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Now on with the show!

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

This market is, in my humble opinion, a must see. The little town is gorgeous and I actually think I might have enjoyed that part of it more than the Christmas part. The Christmas decor added so much magic and romance, though, that it's hard to say. But enough with my words, have a look for yourself:

We got a late start the day we went. The hubby didn't want to go at all; it was cold and we had some snow flurries here. About halfway there we hit a full snow storm. It was almost full dark by the time we arrived. He was so very angry with me.

My biggest piece of advice?

Go early in the day. The crowds really came out at night, but for the first hour or so it was nice to walk around and look at things. I wish we'd been able to get there earlier.

Also, dress warmly. Rothenburg is on top of a hill and it's quite cold up there. Fortunately, many of the shops are inside buildings so you have a minute to warm up occassionally.

Pictured above is only one of the streets of markets. The whole area makes a big square and there are little clusters of markets in every open space.

Adding to the magic, while we were there they had carolers singing - in full vintage costume! It was whimsical and fun and made such a great memory for us. It was sometime around when we saw them (sorry I don't have a picture of them to show you - I was too busy enjoying the moment!) that Mike looked at me and said,

"Ok, you were right. This Christmas Market was worth coming to

and I'm glad you made us get out and do it."

HA! I knew beneath his Scrooge exterior is a Christmas-phile just waiting to come out. (I'm making Christmas-phile a word now, btw.)

Oh, those decorations! Swoon! I just love them. The whole town was decorated beautifully.

It makes me want to put up all of my deco now... even though I would only be able to enjoy it for a week or so.

That's too much trouble... I think. ... Maybe ... or Maybe Not....

And, of course, we ended our day with my requisite hot chocolate. I don't drink a lot of coffee anymore, but I do love a good hot chocolate.

Rothenburg has plenty of cafes to grab a quick bite to eat but seating is scarce. And, of course, there's always gluhwein and crepes from the stalls.

One word of warning: The parking is all at the bottom of the hill and you have to hike up to the top. I didn't find the hike to be too bad (and we had probably the worst parking available), but it might be harder for the infirm. I did see some people struggling to push their stollers up as the roads are cobblestone and it was icy the day we went. Just something to keep in mind.

If you need more information about dates and times this market is open you can find it here. I really love that website, can ya tell?

Please comment below if you love this market as much as I do, or if you had a different experience. I love reading all of your comments however they come to me, but if you post it here other people can see it too!
